Ive thrown out all my deli containers because they just get kinda gross after so many washes. They get foggy and develop scrape marks and are annoying to clean in those small tight grooves of the lid and container lip. I went back to good ol glass containers. Sure, they can break, but i can also bake with them, and they dont get gross and are way easier to clean.
For years I used a dollar store bench scraper. Upgraded to one that cost about 10$. Works just as well as the dollar store one, I totally didn’t need to buy it. Everyone needs a bench scraper, they are so useful, but the dollar store one is totally sufficient
If you’re like ‘this is still too fancy for me, i have 4 dollars and everything i own is in a backpack’, I got you.
1 knife (ideally this would have something to sharpen it on, a paring knife or small chef’s knife is just fine. i like a santoku. Something with a sheath of some kind please). 1 pair wooden chopsticks (sturdy, please, or replaceable). 1 spoon (sturdy plastic or metal). 1 small pot with lid (stainless steel if you can get it, a flat lid you can use in other ways is nice). Something to cook on (near infinite options depending on where you are). A strainer/colander/cheesecloth and a bowl/plate of some kind would also be nice, but it’s not mandatory.
Haven’t done any polls, but when you meet enough homeless people, full time campers, uber rich minimalists, people who share a studio apartment with 5 people, broke people, etc, you find some common objects most of them have had forever. This set will let you cook hot meals, soak cold ones, make a hot beverage, peel most produce, gut/scale fish and pluck birds, whip cream or scramble eggs, pick out small objects without using your fingers, drain boiling water, steam anything, fry anything small enough to fit in your pan, make basic candies and desserts, throw together a sauce, salad, or soup, you name it. It is 100% technique and while there are some things that do require special equipment, by and large you really just need semi functional hands, non toxic materials and ingredients of any kind, a source of potable water, and the knowledge of how to handle what you have to make food. Or anything else, for that matter. Trial and error will serve you here as long as you don’t majorly fuck up and poison or malnourish yourself, so try to avoid that.
(Note: please do not try to live anywhere without things like a knife and clean water. You are not a survival expert and you will die horribly. Even in desperate moments you will thank yourself for thinking critically before throwing away any ability to access resources. Thanks, go have fun)
One of my absolute favourites is a flexible silicone bowl scraper shaped spatula. Best tool for mixing ingredients, and so much more. It should be right up there with the y shaped peeler.
Chef tip: Buy yourself a pair of Korean BBQ tongs. They’re cheap, sturdy, and super useful for almost everything in the kitchen. A tool every home cook shouldn’t be without.
I LOVE a good kitchen utensil. My drawers are overflowing, but I can’t stop. I actually have most of these but the pieces I don’t have…hmm…added to my (ever growing) list!

I carry my early wood spatula at every kitchen I work in lol it’s gone through some stuff for sure. Still holding up though!
Underrated would be a good cutting board, idk if that comes in more as a tool or appliance though
Tweezers? Just use chopsticks lol
I LOVE a good kitchen utensil. My drawers are overflowing, but I can’t stop. I actually have most of these but the pieces I don’t have…hmm…added to my (ever growing) list!
